【TEC's Activity】Get your hands dirty! Join TEC’s engagement in global LGBTQI+ movement
Taiwan is the first country in Asia legalizing same-sex marriage. While we’re proud to be the pioneer for enshrining our basic rights, the LGBTQI+ political participation rate in Taiwan remains low compared to other LGBTQI+ friendly countries in the world. Out of all the elected politicians in Taiwan, only 3 of them are openly out, contributing to a ratio of 0.03%. Yet, in many countries that have legalized same-sex marriage, their LGBTQI+ political participation has already reached 7% or above. Many of our international partners are surprised by the gap.
In recent years, Taiwan Equality Campaign has been progressively connecting with the international community, striving to communicate Taiwan’s efforts and milestones on the advancement of gender equality, and to contribute as part of the global gender movement. During our conversations with other counterparts, we realized that the rising anti-gender movement globally has extensively impacted on various issues that we are commonly concerned about, including anti-abortion, anti-gay and anti-equality speech, and criminalization of homosexuality.
In this context, in our coming October session of the LGBTQI+ Political Participation Seminar Series, we’d like to examine the relationship between and amongst the notion of LGBTQI+ political participation and the global anti-gender movement, whether there's any territorial differences, and explore together how LGBTQI+ politicians and civic citizens can act and react to this emerging wave.
We’re very grateful to have invited the following honorable guest speakers to join our session to discuss together:
- Jack Patrick Lewis, State Representative of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
- Louise Pratt, Senator for Western Australia
- Jennifer Lu, Director of Asia Program, Outright International
- Alan Wardle, Director of Global Equality Caucus (an international network of parliamentarians and elected representatives dedicated to tackling discrimination against LGBT+ people)
With just a few months to go before the Taiwan Presidential and Legislative Election in January 2024, for those who are interested and concerned about politics, gender and global gender movement, don’t miss this invaluable opportunity!
